Vidiot's Box

If you didn’t catch Guillermo del Toro’s near-universally-loved Pan’s Labyrinth when it was in theatres, you should check it out now, especially as it’s arrived in a well-curated two-disc set. A brief video prologue from del Toro himself hints at what the production cost him in physical (he lost 40 pounds over the shooting) and mental terms (lots of sleepless nights, apparently). Other extras include commentary from del Toro, featurettes on “The Power of Myth,” the film’s visual effects and even a short doc on del Toro’s use of colour. There’s also an episode of The Charlie Rose Show featuring del Toro along with the fellow Mexican directors who seemed to dominate the movies last year, Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men) and Alejandro González Iñarritu (Babel). Oh yeah, and something called “DVD Comics,” which you click through as if you’re reading a comic book. It includes stories featuring the Giant Toad and Pale Man characters from the film.

If you still can’t get enough Columbo after all the recent box sets of the series—and I know I can’t—the Columbo Mystery Movie Collection 1989 features five TV movies from that year, when Peter Falk returned to the role (which was originally offered to Bing Crosby!) for the first time since the ’70s.
