Ill Groove goodness

by SCOTT C
Well, the results are in from this year’s Montreal Underground Gala that was held last weekend, recognizing contributions to Montreal and Quebec’s hip hop scene. Francophone Album of the Year went to Manu Militari’s Voix de fait, with Manu taking Artist of the Year as well. Anglo Album of the Year went to GunDei’s Ghetto Gospel, while Group of the Year went to l’Assemblée. And even though I was actually nominated for the first time ever, the best DJ award went to DJ Manifest. Doesn’t this guy have enough awards already? Anyways, congrats to everyone who won, and for a full list of all the winners in all the different categories, check out www.galamu.com.

As I mentioned last week, the annual funding drive over at CKUT 90.3 FM is in full swing, and that means doing anything remotely possible to get you to dig deep and support Montreal’s number-one community radio station. Tonight, Thursday, May 3, Mix Thursdays at Saphir present the one and only Tony Ezzy and Pad Class live in an effort to come between you and your hard-earned money. They’ll be getting DJ support from yours truly, Melon and Rhys Taylor, just to sweeten the pot. All money collected from the $5 cover at the door will go directly to CKUT, so come out and support.

As promised, here’s the hype on the Ill Groove Garden 10th-anniversary blowout happening this Friday, May 4, at Boodha Bar. After a decade on CKUT, these guys have called upon DJ Hybrid, DJ Mystical Flex, DJ Blaster, DJ Peaches, DJ Cap 3, DJ Goser, Bides and DJ Redd Dredd, as well as Manchilde, Zip-Loks and DJ Raid, to party hard! Check out the full deal at the all-new www.hype-man.net. You can get yourself in the door for only $5 if you hit up igg@hypeman.net, but the rest of you lazy mofos will have to shell out $10 to reap the Ill Groove benefits. Ill Groove Garden has been on CKUT every Sunday night, from 11 p.m.–midnight, forever, providing hungry heads with a weekly dose of underground, old school, true school, spoken-word poetry and rare grooves. Can’t forget to say that there will be a very special live performance from the Butta Babees featuring Sam Glass, so make sure you reach.
