Had Ian Lawrence been thinking, his Easter holiday might have been better. Instead, the irony of the D.A.R.E. to Resist Drugs and Violence t-shirt he was wearing becomes fodder for a cruel and mocking press. According to East Hartford, Connecticut, police, Lawrence’s first slip was skidding to a sudden halt at an intersection being monitored by traffic police. He then backed up and waited for the light to turn green before continuing on his way, but police had already decided to chat with him a propos stop lights, and pulled him over. In spite of Lawrence’s D.A.R.E. t-shirt, Officer John DuPont says that when Lawrence stepped out of his vehicle, an overwhelming smell of pot came with him. DuPont asked Lawrence about the smell, and Lawrence invited the officer to search the car, perhaps certain DuPont would never think to look in the pouch of a stuffed Easter bunny on the back seat. But DuPont did. Before the search was over, 16 sandwich bags full of pot had been found, along with hundreds of empty dime bags and a digital scale. In setting Lawrence’s $50K bail, Judge Raymond Norko commented, “I love seasonal crimes.” by Scott Saxon
