This Saturday, March 24, another one bites the dust as Wefunk’s Professor Groove and his buddy Smoked Meat Fax Machine both celebrate the big three-oh with a party over at Main Hall. Of course, this birthday celebration will be comprised of nothing but the funk, featuring a guest appearance from the one and only Cheeba Cheeba Kid on the wheels as well. Things get rolling around 10 p.m., and best of all, it’s free. Now, Groove may be over the hill, but he and his Wefunk brother DJ Static are about to embark on a European tour that will take them to Germany, Poland, Switzerland and France. Not a bad birthday gift at all. More info about all of this stuff is at www.wefunkradio.com. Montreal MCs are steadily making moves these days, as Rugged Intellect unveils the brand new video for his song “Next Dose,” featuring the production of Domingo and the microphone talents of the one and only Ras Kass. The video itself is pretty gully, but it more than does the trick to support this naturally rugged track. Local group Metazon, meanwhile, has emerged from the studio with a brand new release called Le Rassemblement, on which they’ve tapped into the gifts of their very talented friends to help get their point across. It features contributions from Dramatik, le Cerveau, Dee, Sola, Northern Lights, Corporation Click, S-Cro, Face-T and many more. If you’ve got a minute, check out a few tracks at www.myspace.com/metazon. It’s time once again for any DJs, producers, singers, songwriters or musicians who want to take their craft to another level to apply for the Red Bull Music Academy. With the application period running from March 23 to May 4, you should have more than enough time to fill out the 55 questions on the application. If accepted, you’ll be flown, all expenses paid, to one of two two-week sessions that just happen to be in Toronto this fall. For the last 10 years, the RBMA has provided music lovers and artists with the chance to exchange, build and learn from experienced international artists in an intimate setting, taking from every corner of music. After sessions in Berlin, Sao Paulo, Cape Town, Rome and Melbourne, Toronto may not sound too exciting for those of us living in Montreal, but it’s an international experience no matter what city it’s held in. Check out www.redbullmusicacademy.com, where you can download the application, or e-mail me for more info. Seven reasons 300 is all sweat and balls:
