Mountain man

As I write this, I’m trying to decide if I have lost any and all ability to hold my alcohol, or if there truly is something about a change in altitude and how it affects your system. Here in Denver, Colorado, the mile-high city, a liquor lightweight like myself has no chance against the mountain air and its ability to knock visitors on their ass, especially after a few drinks. I’m here along with fellow Montrealer DJ Miles Moore attending a Red Bull Music Academy summit, in preparation for this year’s upcoming fall session in good ol’ Toronto. It’s interesting to meet with people from Washington, Memphis, Nebraska, New York and every other corner of North America, people who are doing everything in their power to make sure that good music is getting to the people in their area. Who knew that there was a love/hate cross-section of scenes that each have their own take on the Baltimore club phenomenon and all its subsequent stepchildren? Who knew that there were people in Texas that have no love for Bun B, Mike Jones or DJ Screw? And I’ve never before heard a guy from Dallas complain about how more people need to know about Maestro Fresh Wes. Anyways, music heads are all around and hopefully, as the week goes on, Montreal’s place in all of this will be cemented, because we’ve got lots to contribute musically. I’m coming back to Montreal for what I like to call the one-two-punch weekend, with none other than DJ Spinna joining Jojoflores and the gang for a very special edition of Therapy at new spot Obeko Suite (3554 St-Laurent) on Friday, March 9. Check it out—it’s free before midnight, and $10 after, so get there early. And for the record, I’m guessing Spinna will most likely be playing his house and garage hand, as opposed to his underground hip hop and soul side, just so you know.

Not to be outdone, DJ Jazzy Jeff returns to Montreal to do what he does best on March 10 at Club Opera. Always the consummate master of everything soulful, you should put Jeff on your list of things to do, simply because he does it right.
