Tonight, Jan. 25,
former indie stalwarts Sloan play la Sala Rossa, at the
tail end of a tour to promote the U.S. release of their
album Never Hear the End of It. This album—seemingly produced
in a crap factory, as all 30 songs are misses—will make many a Sloan
fan over a certain age pine for the old days, for a time before we had
to contemplate that this band has now made more bad albums than good
ones. For those hoping that the small venue may lead them to tone down
the big rock-show antics, here’s some older stuff to get you in the
mood:
“Same
Old Flame, a classic 7” from 1996
“Coax
Me”
If you enjoy the
vaguely Eastern European/klezmer-type music
that Beirut
has made popular of late, check out mama!milk (www.mamamilk.com),
particularly the songs on Gala de Caras. An acoustic duo from Japan, mama!milk—accordion player Yuko Ikoma and contrabassist Kosuke
Shimizu—put together some beautiful sounds, and are described, for
whatever it’s worth, as “Japanese new exotica.”
Now let’s move from mama!milk to mamaluke, which is what I am for getting into Montreal ’s Land of Talk
so late in the game. For anyone who didn’t have
their act together when this came out a year ago, go download “All My Friends” now,
and get into this band.
And finally, this
Wednesday, Jan 30, Justin Timberlake is in town. Of the many Timberlake-vs.-? mashups
out there, one worth checking out is the faceoff
with Siouxsie
and the Banshees.
