The Incubator

Hey, ladies!

by SCOTT C

Four days later, I’m realizing that I probably got frostbite when I decided to ride my bike to the Kalmunity photo shoot this past weekend. What the shit is that? I was thinking, “Why is it taking my ear so long to thaw out?” Because you’re stupid and didn’t wear something to completely cover your head, guy! Lesson learned.

If you know about Fred Everything, then you know that his Lazy Days Sessions at Academy are anything but, bringing soulful and funky house to the forefront. This Saturday, Jan. 27, he teams up with pal Mike Fresco for another one. Cover is $5 before midnight and $8 after. Also on Jan. 27, MC Cyrano de Montreal and Negsayo team up for a night of hip hop, reggae, reggaeton, R&B and funk over at Inspecteur Epingle at 4051 St-Hubert. They’ll also be joined by their special guest for the evening, Frenchi Blanco. The 10 p.m. show is free.

Licking closely at the heels of Belly’s $200K/150-girl video is Montreal ’s own Malicious, who celebrates Misa Campo’s birthday with a video model search party on Saturday at Orchid. That’s right. If you think you got what it takes to be the next hottie to post up beside Malish, then this party is for you. Apparently Canada’s hottest car show/pinup/video model Francine Dee is gonna be there, strutting her stuff, all leading up to the new video, which will eventually be shot by RT of 235films in February. Look for a new album from Malicious, Music Starts With M, on the horizon.

Reggae vibes continue to reach downtown with the introduction of At la Plage, a weekly reggae happening that promises live performances and a showcase for local and visiting talent. On Wednesday, Jan. 31, at La Plage, host Singing P and selections from Krinjah will set the stage for guests Jah Faith from Inword, Kya Kindu from the Kalmunity Vibe Collective and Megado. Doors are at 9 p.m., show at 10 p.m., $5.

The Microtone Kitchen gang continues to innovate with their striking combination of harmonic DJing mixed with turntablism and live instrumentation. Next Thursday, Feb. 1, they perform at Main Hall with DJ/turntablists Mana, Killa-Jewel, Praiz, Midas and Panda-Zal, keyboardist/guitarist Johnny Know 1, and new blood, bassist Seb Marin from Dead Messenger. Should be a full night, with DJ support from DJ Static and John Harry. Admission is $5 in advance, $7 at the door, with tickets available at the Soul Mechanics DJ School at 3875 A St -Denis.
