Roadblocks to peace

With Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay visiting Israel to prove our country can turn a blind eye to apartheid every bit as well as the U.S., complaints are growing over the fact that Israeli PM Ehud Olmert’s promise to remove some of the roadblocks peppering the West Bank has turned out to be just another lie. Palestinian officials and human rights groups are pointing out that many of the roadblocks Olmert said would be dismantled a month ago are still in place today. Meanwhile, sources inside the Israeli military have admitted that 44 of the roadblocks that the army claimed to have already taken down haven’t actually existed for some time.

“Nothing has changed,” said Namir Hammad, an aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Confirming accusations by the UN, a source inside the Israeli military said the allegedly dismantled roadblocks had either been removed long ago or had been circumnavigated by Palestinians earlier. The number of existing roadblocks and obstacles itself is disputed, with Israeli officials placing it at 160, while the UN and other human rights groups estimate it upwards of 500.
