30 is the new 20

Get the weekend started with the launch party for the new book Pipe Fiends: A Visual Overdose of Canada’s Most Infamous Skate Spot, compiled by Marc Tison and Barry Walsh, over at the Nest (3673 Ste-Dominique) this Friday, Dec. 15 from 8 p.m. to midnight. If you’ve ever enjoyed riding the Big O full-pipe, you can’t miss this. You’ll also find other books, art, photos, DJs and giveaways courtesy of Mudscout Media and friends.

This Saturday, Dec. 16, is the day that DJ Static celebrates his 30th birthday with a jam over at Triplex in the Pepsi Forum (2313 Ste-Catherine W.). Hip hop group Île City will also be launching their new album Agenda Reciprocity at the same spot. Tix are $5. Welcome to the club, Static!

Head & Hands are throwing a massive event called Youth Rising, this Sunday at 6767 Côte-des-Neiges. Dedicated to Dawson shooting survivor Hayder Khadim (aka “Jiggy”) and nonviolence, the show presents a crazy line-up of talent. Some of the performers include Kalmunity, Nomadic Massive, Implosion, CeasRock, Jacumbai and Jazz in Color. Tix are $2 for youth, $5 for adults, doors open at 7 p.m.

This year, my usual quiet New Year’s getaway to a northern Ontario retreat has taken a backseat to party-time in Montreal. For those of you who don’t know, I was also born on the first of January, so my birthday generally translates into an extra amount of drunken foolishness. For the first time ever, the Goods has secured la Sala Rossa on Dec. 31 for the No-Frills New Years Eve/Scott C Birthday Bash, and you’re all invited. I’ll be joined by my good friends DJ Kobal, Moonstarr and Tashish for a night of funk, soul, hip hop, broken beat, house, underground disco and boogie that goes from 10 p.m. until 4:30 a.m. The $12 ticket is only available at the door, so start planning now.

Headzup and All Massive are teaming up for their own New Year celebration on Dec. 31 at Centre Fractal (7240 Clark), where DJs Miles Moore, Don-Ray, Steve Gatsoul, DJ Alek, Soltribe and Toronto’s Robert Strauss will get down from 10 p.m. until dawn. Tickets, $15 for the first 100 and $20 after, are available online at www.allmassive.com, as well as at Moog Audio (3828 St-Laurent) and Atom Heart (364-B Sherbrooke E.).

With Christmas party season in full swing, DJ 7D and I thought we’d try to get all of our friends out for a little Monster Groove X-Mas Jam this Friday, Dec. 15 at Kunta Lounge. D has been away for weeks in France and we thought this was the best way to usher in the holiday season. Expect big tunes and Xmas punch, and maybe even some overflow drunks from the Mirror Christmas party down the street! n
