Man, I thought they had scraped the bottom of this particular barrel, but apparently not. The fine people at Paramount have now released a special edition DVD set of Star Trek: The Animated Series. No kidding—this thing includes commentary tracks and a making-of documentary! This show appeared in the early ’70s, several years before the movies would kick in and just before the Trek convention craze took off. Due to a writers’ strike at the time, many of the people who had written for the live-action show actually returned to write for the cartoon, so it’s not quite as abominable as one might expect. The animation, however, is pretty damn cheap. It was a production of Filmation, after all, the same cultural impresarios who created the animated spin-offs The Brady Kids and Gilligan’s Planet.

Comedy Central is celebrating a full glorious decade of South Park with South Park: The Hits, Vol. 1. Trey Parker and Matt Stone have chosen their own favourite 10 episodes. Included is the Emmy-Award-winning episode “Best Friends Forever” and the animated short that started it all, “The Spirit of Christmas,” in which Santa and Jesus square off in a schoolyard fight. Stone and Parker supply hilarious commentary on several of the episodes, explaining their varied points of inspiration—including celebrity tales from the tabloids. A perfect stocking stuffer for the twisted animation freak. —Matthew Hays
