The Load-Down

Further confirmation of the goodness of soccer was found this week upon discovering that Mogwai will be providing the soundtrack to an upcoming documentary called Zidane: A 21st Century Project, about the French soccer star. You can download some tracks here: theyellowstereo.blogspot.com/2006/11/mogwai-zidane-21st-century-portrait.html. It’s some of the post-rock outfit’s mellowest stuff, and one can easily imagine it playing with slow-motion soccer footage and guys with English accents going on about the “beauty” of “footie.”

For those without the wherewithal to make a decent mix CD, head over to Communications Major/English Minor (gothbrooks.blogspot.com/), a music blog run by a smart-ass kid who posts a full mix CD, in MP3 form, every Sunday. The most recent one is 17 tracks, and features Pavement, the Zombies and Sun Ra among others, along with the airtight legal disclaimer that “these songs will be removed if desired by the band or those who represent them.” Let’s hope John Mayall doesn’t have good legal representation, because his track “I’m Your Witch Doctor” is the best blues/rock/’60s-type thing I’ve heard in ages.

If you like crap, you simply must check out Moby’s remix of Tony Bennett’s “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” It’s offered as a free download at www.target.com/tonybennettremix—expect to start hearing it in malls soon. You can also download a Garageband file to create your own remix, which I imagine could be pretty funny, but I can’t find out because it’s for Mac only. So please, Mac users: as I understand it you are all creative types, make some remixes and send me links!
