Holy Kramer!

by SCOTT C

After trying to track down the elusive CL Smooth all weekend, I was getting a little bored this morning, waiting for that magic phone call from New York. Luckily for me, Kramer from Seinfeld decided to make an even bigger comeback to the public eye than the aforementioned MC.

After watching a disturbed and enraged Michael Richards explode with a barrage of racial slurs onstage, after some noisy patrons couldn’t keep their voices down, my utter disbelief was interrupted by a phone call. No, it wasn’t CL Smooth. Not yet anyway. It was, however, my good friend Wheels, who had called to find out about the release of the upcoming Mos Def album, and if I’d be writing something about the circumstances surrounding it.

Keep in mind I’d just had my mind blown by Kramer yelling, “He’s a nigger!” at somebody in the crowd. If it hadn’t been for Wheels, I would have never known about how the Mighty Mos Def had rented a flatbed trailer and set up shop right outside the MTV Video Awards back in the summer, where he performed his song “Katrina Clap” before being arrested by the man. Apparently protesting the plight of the completely overlooked people of New Orleans took a backseat to all the pomp and bullshit going on inside.

In a weird coincidence, I later found some video of Kramer apologizing for his outburst on David Letterman, where Seinfeld just happened to be a guest. He talked about what he had done, and somehow managed to work the plight of the overlooked residents of New Orleans into his apology. Mos Def’s new LP True Magic was slated for a September 2006 release, but hasn’t seen the light of day yet.

Looking ahead, it looks like DJ Craze will dip into town to do what he does best when he plays at Academy on Dec. 1, bringing some true drum & bass turntablism back to the Main. He’s sharing the bill with MC Armanni, Corey K, DJ Bind, MC Evader and Hussler. Boston’s DJ Supreme One rolls into town to play the Goods this Saturday, Nov. 25, at la Sala Rossa, and having been here before on some record-collecting business, you know he’s bound to come with deep crates. He’s produced records for ED O.G., Masta Ace, Big Shug and Guru, and aims to please in his first-ever Montreal DJ appearance. n

Seven reasons this isn’t a comeback:
1. Kenn Starr Starr Status (Halftooth)
2. Dr. John Desitively Bonnaroo (ATCO)
3. Don Blackman “Heart’s Desire” (Arista)
4. The Jonsez “Ortega Cartel” (independent)
5. El Michels Affair “Slide Show” (Truth & Soul)
6. Soil & Pimp Sessions Pimp Master EP (Brownswood)
7. 10cc “The Worst Band in the World” (London)
