Rightfully occupying its place as one of the classics of the sci-fi genre, and of ’50s film in general, Fred M. Wilcox’s 1956 Forbidden Planet is a deceptively intelligent, literary and even avant-garde adventure. Inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the movie has Leslie Nielsen as a starship captain on a rescue mission to the planet Altair-4, where he finds the mysterious Dr. Edward Morbius (Walter Pidgeon) and his daughter (Anne Francis).

So many productions ripped off Forbidden Planet, with its iconic Robby the Robot and beautiful sets—even to the point of re-using its production materials—that the look of the movie may have associations campier than intended. What follows is an often-psychedelic, often-Freudian story, the complexity of which may surprise you.

MGM’s 50th Anniversary Special Edition features additional scenes and footage, three docs about the film and two other Robby the Robot vehicles. The Invisible Boy is a goofy-looking 1957 feature about a kid who teams up with Robby to save the world from an evil computer; it’s included here in its entirety. Robby also shows up in “Robot Client,” an episode of the Thin Man TV show, so you basically get two weird spin-offs in one with that one.

All that jazz is included in the Ultimate Collector’s Edition, which also includes a li’l Robby the Robot action figure, which is pretty cool, and a coupon you can mail in for a (reproduced) copy of the original poster.
