Remember this

I have no doubt that you’re going to see people out this weekend when good ol’ Jurassic 5 make a stop at Metropolis for a show on Saturday that includes Edmonton’s own Cadence Weapon. These guys know what a hip hop show is supposed to be about, and shouldn’t disappoint, so check it out.

If J5 isn’t really your bag, and you’d much rather listen to a proper reggae band doing dubbed-out covers of Radiohead and Pink Floyd tunes, then you might want to check the Easy Star All-Stars at le National, also on Nov. 11. Tix are a modest $16 in advance and $18 at the door, with opening duties going to Panic & the Rebel Emergency.

Daniel Russo Garrido, aka Boogat, takes the stage at the Just for Laughs Museum, on Nov. 11 as well, taking part in the 20th anniversary edition of Coup de Coeur Francophone. He shares the bill with Baie Saint-Marie, Nova Scotia’s Jacobus and Maleco and Quebec City’s Manu Militari. Doors are at 8:30 p.m. and the tax is $15. Check out www.coupdecoeur.qc.ca for a full schedule of events.

Love ’em or hate ’em, Swollen Members are still Canada’s biggest selling hip hop group ever, and that simple fact ensures that they have fans in this city. Having said that, their new LP Black Magic, on their own label Battleaxe, ain’t half bad, seeing as they’ve decided to chill on the overabundance of radio-ready rap and get back to the real boom-bap. They’re here on Nov. 22 for a show at les Saints that’ll cost you $16 in advance and $20 at the door.

Just found out that Louie Vega and all the soulful Latin goodness of the Elements of Life Band are playing New Year’s Eve at Olympia. Louie’s slated to play an extended set, and the band is just plain serious. No word yet on a ticket price, but remember, this is New Year’s I’m talking about here.

Looking for something to do on Sunday night? DJ Manifest and DJ Nerve have teamed up to bring you a little something at Lola Lounge, every Sunday night from here on in. Their new night, called Loungin’, will have the best in classic hip hop, R&B and reggae on tap, and it’s free.

Finally, big thanks to everyone who came down to Kunta on Wednesday nights to check us out over the last two years, but you should know that C&D Music Factory, featuring myself and DJ 7D, is moving to Friday nights at Kunta Lounge. Starting this Friday, Nov. 10, anybody looking for a proper dose of next-level hip hop, funk, soul, future flavours and shit you never heard can check us out every week. 7D’s in France for another couple of weeks, so look for me with some special guests in the Friday night slot until he returns.

FRIDAY NIGHT JOINTS, PEOPLE! fathead@videotron.ca
