Disco Volante

Weight loss, peep shows, rum and the lash

by JACK OATMON

Now that everyone’s gotten their greedy guts filled with potatoes, tofurkey, cranberries and a gluttonous mound of indie rock, it’s about time to get on our track suits and dance away all those excess pounds of gravy and angst. If, like me, you pounded down two heaping rounds of mom’s delicious fare in a row, you might need an extra-exhausting weekend of party-hopping to whip you back into club-standard emaciation. For such a conundrum, we have on the menu this week a smorgasbord of high-impact dancercizing available.

The incredible line-up arranged for the Nujaz Festival (check www.nujaz.net for info) is just about enough madness for one weekend. However, in true Montreal style, there are a zillion and one other great places to get silly this week. My first council would be the Supersystem show at Main Hall on Saturday, Oct. 14. The virtual nonexistence of dance music that expresses themes more sophisticated than “let’s party and have sex” is one of my personal pet peeves. Supersystem supersede that assertion, both musically and lyrically, and are thus one of my favourites. Now, with a fresh album that leaves an ironically optimistic, upbeat sound behind to explore the darker, colder, metallic side of the band, I’m expecting a performance that will literally keep fans on their toes. The last show they played in town was ballistic, not to mention the unforgettable onstage dancing.

The only hitch in that plan might be a burlesque show by the Suicide Girls that same night. I might just cave on Supersystem and opt to go to les Saints and twiddle the change in my pocket, mouth agape, as a gob of spit dribbles down the chin of every last net-geek in the place. Expect long line-ups at the washroom stalls.

Otherwise, you can see DJ Shadow at Metropolis on Friday. You also might want to witness the return of Belgian electro producer Headman at the SAT on Saturday. His last performance in town was sweet.

Parking Nightclub has had a major profile boost this month, as two resident DJs from the club release awaited albums. Frigid’s new disc, Bedroom Sessions, packs the insanity of the live act into polycarbonate plastic form surprisingly well. As for Mini’s Audio Hygiene, the launch party is tonight, Oct. 12, at her ridiculously but justifiably popular Overdose night. Be one of the many to check that out.

On Sunday night, I’m more than likely to go see We Are

Scientists and Art Brut at la Tulipe. That’s not to say that I believe all the hype, but the tracks I’ve heard by both groups have been neato and I missed them last time. Curiosity kills this cat all nine times.

Finally, I must urge you all to see Trailer Park Boys so that you can properly understand the culture of my home province. Did I mention that Julian once bought me a rum and coke at a bar in Halifax?
