If you don’t have the balls to go bowling, you can always check out Chicago’s Kid Sister, who joins Flosstradamus, Giselle Numba 1, Subtitle and C-Rayz Walz for a night of hip hop for every taste. That goes down Friday, Oct. 6 at Academy, where Pop Montreal and Peer Pressure have teamed up for this crazy night of music. Giselle Numba 1 hits the stage first at 10:15 p.m. Last year’s Canadian hip hop surprise Cadence Weapon plays Lambi on Friday night too, hitting the stage at midnight. On Saturday, Oct. 7, A-Trak and Chromeo (DJ set) lock things down with the Rodney Graham Band and Daddy’s Hands for a show at Centre Fractal. Also on Saturday, we can’t forget the Dr. Octagon show at les Saints, with support from Plastic Little, Atach Tatuq, Bourgeois Cyborgs and Bless. I’d kind of like to see Bless jump on stage with Plastic Little, but really, what are the chances? Over at Salon Daomé on Friday, music heads and dancers can check out the Los Angeles DJ duo of Tom Noble, from Lotusland Records, and Danny Holloway from Dublab. Definitely diggin’ deep into the funk spectrum for a hot night of nuggets, they’re joined by local boy Andy Williams. Tix are $10 at the door. Big news for anyone who can place the titles This Is Not a Love Song and Best by Far, because U.K. soul king Omar is finally coming to Montreal to support the North American release of his latest LP, Sing If You Want It, in stores Oct. 6. He’s playing a show at Jello, on Oct. 27, that is a must for anyone who claims to dig real soul music. Omar has been on my shortlist of musical geniuses for a long time, and a serious wish-list contender for shows I’ve always wanted to see come through Montreal, so if you feel like being inspired, I’ll see you there. I suggest you take a break from watching Battlestar Galactica this week and shift your attention to Spike Lee’s new documentary about the events of Hurricane Katrina. When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts is an in-depth, four-hour look into America’s worst natural disaster and the mess of social injustice that has followed as a result. Interviewing residents, politicians and media correspondents, and edited together with graphic footage of the storm, flooding and aftermath, the film presents some hard questions about the American government’s handling of the entire situation. You can’t rent this one yet, kids, so start your search engines... IS PRINCESS CHARLIE A MAN OR A WOMAN? fathead@videotron.ca |
