Disco Volante

Death from down south

by JACK OATMON

I crisply recall the tumultuous night that I decided to start writing the blog that was the precursor to this column. My friends and I were thoroughly hyped up, made up and dressed up to get shaken down by a DFA Records crew at Lambi. The show was DJed by Tim Sweeney, who essentially grated out an overview of the DFA sampler mix from which you might know him. Happy, if not particularly enlightened, I proceeded to dance blissfully away amongst a crowd that, for the most part, seemed slightly less excited than myself about the show.

After the gig, during a brief chat with members of the Juan Maclean, I was told to come down to the W hotel, of which I had heard but never been to, for an after-show set by Sweeney. Despite my reservations about going to a bar that I imagined to be totally unaffordable, I couldn’t help but wonder what sort of shenanigans the DFA cats would be up to. Off we went. The battle through the snow and wind was more than worth it, and about 20 colourfully clad youngsters were treated to a second mind-boggling show by the grinning Sweeney, while a contingent of confused oil barons and business types looked on balefully.

I’ve been enjoying his podcast ever since, and the experience solidified my plans to begin electronically documenting the fabulous little adventures available to Montreal’s keen-witted music enthusiasts. Hence the blog, and this column by extension. If you caught LCD Soundsystem or were one of the handful there to enjoy the soulful electro-funk of Tim Sweeney, and you liked what you heard, take the time Sunday night to go to the launch of The DFA Remixes Vol. 2, featuring LCD’s James Murphy, Sweeney and their posse member Shit Robot. That’s at the SAT. You could also go see Ladytron with CSS at Metropolis that same night. Or you could go for James Blunt at Bell Centre, if that’s what turns your crank.

Before Sunday comes, my pretties, chew on this: party at the Mansion on Thursday with Jonah and Simon B (just walk up Bishop—you’ll figure it out). Friday night features the Mole live at Academy, preceded by Stephan Beaupré and Vincent Lemieux on the decks. Saturday at the Main Hall will be a shaker, with a diverse line-up that won’t upset your attention deficit. That’s six DJ sets, each with its own visual accompaniment, all for the sum of $10. Next Wednesday, Oct. 4, will be a great reason to go and hang out again at Salon Daomé—catch naw, Deadbeat, Heart and Soul and Cyan while chillaxin’ on the slick furniture setup. Only costs a fiver.
