Tempting fate

by SCOTT C

Last week, I got into it once again with my friend Fate, who regularly engages me in some good ol’ down-home shit talking and debate about hip hop music and culture. Needless to say, it would be pointless for me to try to explain what we were vigorously arguing about here, simply because he would probably take me to task later for quoting him out of context. While we’re both passionate about music and love a lot of the same sounds, we’re also diametrically opposed on many points, and butt heads about everything from what makes a classic to MC merits vs. production merits, popular and commercial music coexisting with marginal and underground artists, and so on. I know we’re not the only ones who argue about this shit constantly, so I was thinking we’d get a few more opinionated types together, and call up CFCF12’s now retired Ron Reusch to moderate a hip hop roundtable from week to week, live and direct. Would you watch?

Mark off the calendar for the return of New York Afrobeat dons the Budos Band, who make their way back to Montreal for a show at Kola Note on Oct. 20. This $12 ticket includes invites Papagroove and the fabulous DJ Kobal on the ones and twos.

Join the one and only Frenchi Blanco, along with Cyrano de Montreal and Jacumbai, as they present le Trio Franco this Friday Sept. 29 at l’Alizé.

Pop Montreal presents the sixth annual Future of Music Policy Summit, Oct. 5–7 at McGill’s Schulich School of Music. Whether you’re a music industry veteran or just getting ready to embark on an independent music adventure, there is definitely something here for everyone. Panels and talks cover everything from international touring and visas to how the money moves in the music industry, and offers the panel A State of Independents: The Changing Definition of Indie, welcoming the views and expertise of organizations like SOPREF, Canadian Music Creators Coalition, SOCAN, Ninja Tune, CBC Radio 3 and special guest David Byrne. Combine that with musicians, managers, academics and policymakers, and you’ve got three days of knowledge that no amount of book-learnin’ can compete with. Check out www.futureofmusic.org/events/summit06/ for the complete schedule and additional info.

Tonight, Sept. 28, support your local Slam Team as they try to raise money to travel to Toronto for the Canadian Spoken Word Festival, where Montreal will be represented for, surprisingly, the very first time. Join Aliyah Thomas, Preach Ankobia, Jason “Blackbird” Selman and Lady Katalyst for this sliding-scale show, as they battle each other, at the mercy of random audience judges, at Sablo Kafé. Your $7–$10 would really help these guys out. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Seven reasons it’s time to frame up:
1. Exile Dirty Science (Sound in Color)
2. Defari Street Music (ABB)
3. GB “Papa Smurf” (Operation Unknown)
4. Method Man “Problem” (Def Jam)
5. Pharoahe Monch ft. Tower of Power “Push” (Universal)
6. Alchemist ft. Defari & Evidence “Make My Own” (ALC)
7. Ty ft. De La Soul “Closer” (Big Dada)
