The rap-up

by SCOTT C

What the Bumbershoot? Apparently, rap duo Slug and Ant (aka Atmosphere) had the pleasure of opening up for a reunited Q-Tip, Phife and Ali Shaheed Muhammad as A Tribe Called Quest took the stage at Seattle’s Osheaga equivalent, the Bumbershoot Festival, on Sept. 2–4. Atmosphere headline a show at les Saints this Saturday, Sept. 16, with the warm-up talents of Mac Lethal and Psalm One on tap for all to see. Tix are $20.

And while we’re on the topic of A Tribe Called Quest, you can forget making the trip to Toronto for their Sept. 17 show at Kool Haus, because that shit was sold out a long time ago. They sucked it up to get back together for the 2K Sports Bounce Tour, which will support the new video game NBA 2K7. Dan the Automator has remixed Tribe’s “Lyrics to Go,” which will appear on the soundtrack to the game, and Phife will appear as a playable character along with Common, my pal ?uestlove and others, but you better scoop the game, as that’s the closest anyone in Montreal will get to ATCQ for a little while.

Saturday, Sept. 23, is shaping up to be a busy night, with an early show at Foufounes featuring the return of Jedi Mind Tricks and RA the Rugged Man, brought to you by your hosts Budda Blaze and Revolution from Off the Hook on CKUT 90.3FM. If you’re one of the crustifed dibbs that missed it last time, don’t even think of hesitating this round because the show starts at 8 p.m. sharp and finishes at 11 p.m. Your $10 ticket ($13 at the door) also gets you a proper dose of the newly betrothed Narcicyst, fresh off the plane from Dubai. You should be able to squeeze some solid bangers in before moving your ass over to Raekwon the Chef at Studio Juste Pour Rire. That show should just be getting underway by the time you make your way up the Main—based on Wu-Tang Standard Time, of course. Good ol’ Lex Diamonds reps the Zoo York Am Getting Paid Tour, with support from local heroes Team Canada behind the wheels. I really hope you are getting paid though, because this one will set you back another $25 at the door, which opens at 10 p.m.

As if that wasn’t enough for one week, two days later we’ve got the original microphone fiend Rakim coming to town for a show at Aria. The “R” will be joined by the legendary DJ Kid Capri for what will likely be a hot mix of old and new material. Last time I checked, Admission hadn’t listed a ticket price for Montreal, but Toronto fans are paying $34.95 to sip the juice with this icon, so think something around that number. Look for your boy Malik Shaheed to host the show, and know that the doors open at 8 p.m. for a show that starts at 10 p.m.
