Disco Volante

You are invited!

In this special edition of my weekly chronicles of the prime places to get mashed in Montreal, I’m reaching out to a frequently trash-talked demographic. These folks’ occasional ignorance toward local customs and sometimes terrible French can make them a slight nuisance, but truth be told, their poorly managed economics, ravenous sexual appetite and don’t-give-a-shit attitude make them one of the party-people’s ripest resources. They’re students, they’re young, they’re hot and, best of all, they’ve got way too much spare time and brain cells to burn on the dancefloor. Here at Disco Volante, I have the best interests of the student id at heart and, as such, hate to see hip cats spend weeks hanging out around all the meager dance moves and soggy thrills that lurk in Montreal before realizing where the dope shit is. So, to the discerning nutbar, the sophisticated wastoid and the funky black sheep amongst the student populace, I say heed my words, which are based on a solid foundation of giggly benders and dizzy romping around.

The weekend in Montreal begins on Tuesday, which is our Friday, and ends on Monday, which is our Sunday. But even within that framework, you’re not always safe on Mondays either, if for instance Massive Attack were to be hitting Metropolis this Monday, Sept. 11. So keep in mind that there’s always something wicked going down before you blow all your cash at the pub before 11 p.m. like some dole-driven, witless Brit looking for a little of the ol’ in-out-in-out.

Tuesday is ripe, whether you’re at Blizzarts for a Bitburger and a snippet of Peer Pressure’s patented blend of dirty hip hop and electro club bangers, or at Academy for a touch of thinky, intellectual bloops and bleeps by our friends at ever-popular Dizzy Tuesdays.

Tonight, Thursday, Sept. 7, Mini’s Overdose night down at Parking features the psychedelic sounds of guest Jake Fairley, and, as always, the dangerous price of $2.50 per drink.

Fridays are usually contested territory, but the Academy’s recently-launched weekly, Soultek, has been a sweet success, this week featuring Todd Sines from Detroit. This Friday, you can also go to the Main Hall for the Von Danceparty to hear unreleased techno mashed with dusty retro hits. Also this weekend, for the experimental and insomniac at heart, the Souk Machines event is at the all-night Centre Fractal Friday and Saturday, featuring a sizable collection of artists and musicians who will collaborate and inebriate all night/morning.

For the moment, that should do ya, keeping in mind Piknic Electronik on Sundays, of course. For seasoned party-holics, here’s a quick list of stuff that blew my fuse lately. Ed Bangers, Ellen Allien, the party on Sunday/Monday with the Coconutz guys, A-Rock’s set two Tuesdays ago, Jonah last Friday (to be seen really late this Friday), and a whole bunch of other stuff I can’t remember.

Disco Volante: shamelessly yours in the tireless quest for funky, crunked, post-punk stankin’ shit and mash-up remix paraphernalia.
