Release the hounds!

Not exactly the sleepiest time of the year, September jumps in with both feet, with all kinds of things going on to embrace the back-to-school/back-to-work mindset. This is one busy week, with more than enough on the horizon. This Friday night at Salon Daomé, Brighton’s brightest, Will Holland, aka Quantic, touches down for a little dancefloor session at Soul on Top. He’s joined by big ol’ Andy Williams for a night of hot music. Ten dollars gets you in.

Had a great time at Osheaga last weekend, even though there was nobody playing that I was dying to see. Good times all around though, but if you missed that, you might be interested in the Souk Machines Festival at Centre Fractal (7240 Clark, near Jean-Talon metro), taking place Sept. 8 and 9. This crazy blowout of a festival has almost too much going on to be true, but is definitely worth checking out. There’s a trailer-load of DJs on the bill, including Deadbeat, Kobal, Masala, Sarcastic, Mossman, Luv and Rhys Taylor, as well as music from Tony Ezzy, Tariq Khan, the Golden Mean, Subtitle, Shadow Huntaz, Tez and many, many more. The festival is a multidisciplinary event, gathering 70 artists, musicians, DJs, dancers, comedians, VJs, painters and other performers, to create a crazy, artistic atmosphere that will be an experience to remember. Local acts are joined by artists from Ottawa, Toronto, the U.S. and France, bridging a variety of styles, including jazz, funk, reggae, minimal, D&B, visual arts exhibits, interactive installations, live VJ performances and graffiti murals. Check out the full deal at www.myspace.com/soukmachines.

Also Saturday, Sept. 9, DL Incognito, Moka Only, Frenchi Blanco, Eclipse and the MU DJ battle set up shop at la Sala Rossa for a night of hip hop and soul. See the mighty DJ Manifest take on Godfather D as the latest battle drama unfolds in the magic room at Sala.

Don’t miss the boat, Sept. 9, when the last Fiesta Boat Party boards at 11 p.m. and leaves at midnight from the Old Port’s King Edward Pier. Celebrating 10 years of partying on the water, this back to school jam boasts a floor of house, R&B, reggae and Arabic music, and a second floor of bachata, salsa and reggaeton. Tickets are $30, and you can call 806-2128 for reservations, or check www.dreamtoparty.com for more info.

Celebrate Therapy’s seventh anniversary this Friday, Sept. 8, when they party down at Pub St. James in Old Montreal (380 St-Jacques W.), with a special guest DJ set by the U.K.’s Ben Watt (Buzzin Fly, Everything But the Girl). Naturally, support will be

given by resident DJs Jojoflores, Misayo and JaBig. Doors are at 9 p.m. and guess what? IT’S FREE!

A big goodbye goes out to CKUT music coordinator Sara Saljoughi, who makes the move back to Toronto this week. She’s headed back to T.O. to pursue creative projects and get ready for grad school, so good luck goes out!
