Addiction has long been fodder for filmmakers, from The Panic in Needle Park to Trainspotting to documentaries like Nettie Wild’s Fix. Long thought of as a remedy to the addiction is methadone, the drug given to addicts to ease them off of heroin, a brutally addictive substance. But what’s less known is that many addicts find themselves hopelessly trapped in a methadone addiction after getting past the heroin. In his unblinking documentary Methadonia, Michel Negroponte follows eight former heroin addicts as they attempt to navigate their way through recovery, via methadone. This HBO doc shows the pratfalls involved with such therapy, and illustrates the horrific roadblocks that recovering junkies face.

In lighter DVD news, the second season of Hart to Hart, the hard-hitting husband-and-wife detective series, is now out. For a darker Robert Wagner, however, I would rewind to 1956 for the original A Kiss Before Dying, in which he plays a conniving fiancée killer. Joanne Woodward is so irritating that you’re practically cheering Wagner on in his plot to off her. —Matthew Hays
