Those suffering from Fantasia withdrawal will rejoice at the new DVD anthology from Synapse Films, Small Gauge Trauma: Mind-Blowing Shorts From the Archives of the Fantasia Film Festival. The package includes 13 award-winning shorts from eight different countries, and is introduced by beloved cult movie star Coffin Joe. These shorts were all chosen by long-time Fantasia curator Mitch Davis, and his twisted yet impeccable taste can be felt throughout. There’s the strange Cronenberg-infused animated short The Separation, the Portuguese zombie-fied thriller I’ll See You in My Dreams and one of my favourites, Philip John’s Sister Lulu. But my vote for best of the lot is Flat–N–Fluffy, seven minutes’ worth of inspired lunacy by Montreal animator extraordinaire Benoit Boucher. Severe blood loss never looked so good. In other gore-ific film news, a two-disc ultimate edition of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre has been released on DVD, with a whole new spate of extraneous extras. This thing has stood the test of time—hardcore fans will eat it up. —Matthew Hays
