Team Canada go with the FLOW

by SCOTT C

It’s no secret Montreal’s road warriors Team Canada get around, but some news came down the wire this week that will likely have many more people in Toronto (of all places) talking about DR One and DJ Grandtheft.

“Well, we’ve been building a following there at a monthly party we do called Shuffle, at a club called Revival,” explains Grandtheft. “The concept is everyone’s favourite playlist, all types of music, all types of people, and we get about 600 people out every month. We’ve got some great bookings off of that monthly gig.”

Okay. So Team Canada’s mashed-up mix of hip hop, classic rock, pop and ’80s goodies played with precision on four turntables is a hit right here at home, and in the big ol’ T-Dot, an ideal situation that has them burning the candle at both ends.

“Right now, we’re in Toronto about once or twice a month. Before going to Asia, we played a DOSE anniversary party with De La Soul, and played with Kool Herc for Style in Progress. It’s a long way to go, but it’s good to play to a different crowd too.”

So what happens when our heroes are flexing their DJ superpowers in the right place at the right time? Everything just falls into place.

“I had been talking to FLOW 93.5 FM about getting some remixes and mash-ups on their regular rotation,” Grandtheft chuckles. “I didn’t know that they had ever really heard of us, but apparently the guys who run the station, Wayne Williams and Justin Dumont, saw us play with De La, and they really liked what we did on four decks. They hadn’t even heard our CD yet and they asked us to do a weekly mix show.”

That’s right folks, Team Canada can now be heard playing a half-hour, commercial-free mix show every Saturday on FLOW 93.5 FM, where they’ll join a roster of shows that includes BET’s Big Tigger and DJ Starting From Scratch.

“Basically it’s an offer we can’t refuse, and they’re a great station to work with, and they’re giving us full creative freedom to do whatever we want, and this is on an urban station that doesn’t even play ’80s or rock stuff, so it should be cool. We’re doing what we do on every mix CD, throwing everything in there. It’s good that they’re willing to take a chance on what we’re doing. To get that on any station that’s not college radio is kind of crazy.” Although no official time slot was given at press time, you can always listen live and check out www.flow935.com to see what our boys are up to.
