An increasingly popular marketing ploy in this DVD era is the direct-to-video sequel. This particular sub-genre was pioneered by Disney, who’ve been profitably making animated follow-ups for parents to plop their undiscerning kids in front of for years now, and it seems like more live-action-oriented studios have wised up as of late. There have been follow-ups to the American Pie movies, Starship Troopers, Hollow Man... almost all without any of the original cast. And now, nearly 10 years after the original, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.

Don’t look for Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar or Freddie Prinze Jr. in this one, but get ready to say hello to stars of the future Torrey DeVitto, K.C. Clyde and Sally Ann Brooks as they attempt to elude a mysterious killer who will always and forever know what they did last summer. (Incidentally, what they did was kill a friend in a prank gone wrong.) Whether the movie itself proves that memorable may be a different story.

Also out on DVD this week is Spike Lee’s Inside Man, his heist flick starring Denzel Washington, and one of 2006’s most entertaining releases. —Mark Slutsky
