>> Montreal’s Danny Torrence shows off bedroom beats and up-and-coming talent

by JACK OATMON

Danny Torrence—whose favourite colour is orange, has never ridden a horse and prefers vinyl to digital (but uses all media)—is an established afterhours DJ in a city that loves to do it all night. With a residency at Stereo and a steady flow of gigs, including recently DJing for the Outgames, you gotta wonder what more the guy wants. In light of the upcoming launch of his weekly at Stereo, Climaxxx, the Mirror caught up with him to find out.

Mirror: What’s Climaxxx all about?

Danny Torrence: It’s a chance for me to express my music over a more extended period in one night. Usually, playing on a split bill, I average about three hours. At Climaxxx, I should be playing at least six. There are many guests from among my peers who I’ve wanted to host at Stereo if I had my own night. With Climaxxx, I now have that opportunity. One day, I was given the chance to be heard. I want to do the same for the new talents coming up whom I think, if heard, can make an impact.

M: What are your main sources for finding new talent?

DT: Basically, hearing reviews, whether on message boards or from party people in the scene or, best, when I get the chance to go hear myself. Love the music you want to play and work hard at refining your sound—people will notice!

M: I’m getting this crazy retro-porno-movie vibe from the name of the night.

DT: Climaxxx is pretty much a representation of how I see my music progress during the course of a long set—setting up a dirty, sultry, sexy mood and slowly but surely reaching a higher level of intensity with each song until... Climaxxx!

M: If you could describe that feeling as cocktail, what would it be?

DT: Grey Goose on the rocks with a twist of lime.

With guest DJ Jung at Stereo on Saturday, August 5, 2 a.m., $35
