Future vision

by SCOTT C

Nice to see that following closely on the heels of that crazy Jamie Lidell show at Jazz Fest last month is his buddy Matthew Herbert, scheduled for a gig at Club Soda coming up on August 24. Recently, Herbert contributed a rework of “A Little Bit More” to Lidell’s Multiply Additions, and Mr. Lidell returned the favour with a remix for Herbert’s new single “Moving Like a Train.”

Looking even further into the future, I got word this week that BBC Radio 1Xtra’s baby-faced Benji B will be playing a show at Cabaret on September 28. Benji’s show, Deviation, is one of the best sources for soulful underground music in all its forms, and is listened to weekly by yours truly and music lovers from around the world. On his first trip to Montreal, he’ll be playing with New York underground hip hop producer Ge-ology, Hollertronix road warrior and Montreal regular Low Budget and our very own Team Canada. More info on this one in a few weeks.

If you haven’t heard about The Return of Dr. Octagon, you should know that Kool Keith will be back in Montreal in early November, on his tour to support the twisted ramblings of the new record. Anybody remember the last time he came to town and went crazy live onstage in front of a capacity crowd at Club Soda? I was there, and will probably be there again.

Montreal MC Malicious has been turning up the heat with a brand new video for his song “Heavy MTL,” which was added to MuchMusic, MusiquePlus and MuchVibe last week. Directed by MMVA golden boy RT, and supposedly the biggest budgeted hip hop video ever shot in MTL, it looks super pro, but I’ll give $10 to anyone who can tell me what sets it apart from every other video featuring tits, ass, cars and cats geared up from head to toe. You can check it here: www.mrmalish.com.

It appears Low Budget and Cosmo Baker will soon be getting apartments in Montreal, seeing as they always seem to be here. This Sunday, August 6, the gang at Peer Pressure celebrate a year of partying with the return of these two party-rockers. They’ll be playing alongside jam residents, A-Rock and Hatchmatik at les Saints. Tix are $10 at the door.

Also on Sunday, August 6, is one of my favourite days of the year, the day we take The Goods outside to Piknic Electronik on Île Ste-Hélène. Along with me and Andy Williams, we get to rub shoulders with New York’s Nickodemus (Turntables on the Hudson) and Moonstarr, who will be playing the great outdoors for the first time. If you’re looking for jazz, funk, soul, hip hop, house and broken styles from 1–8 p.m. under the afternoon sun and on a massive system, look for details here: www.piknicelectronik.com. See you in the sun…
