Ciao, Paula

As I write this, the fourth episode of the original Miami Vice is winding down on the TV across the room, and I’m finding myself slightly distracted by all the pastels. Back in 1984, my mother would regularly march into the room right in the middle of the show and switch the channel to anything else, stating that we didn’t need to be watching that junk. That’s why watching the DVD now is a little strange, considering all I can really remember is Crockett, Tubbs, and the music-video feel of the show. My nerd radar went up when I saw that the episode I’d been watching was directed by Paul Michael Glaser, otherwise known as the dude who played the original Starsky on Starsky & Hutch back in 1975. Imagine, a hack actor from a popular undercover buddy-cop show directing a couple of hack actors in an undercover buddy-cop show 10 years later. No wonder this shit is classic. Oh, and mark my words, the new movie version with Jamie Foxx and Colin McRehab is sure to stink like garbage day on Ocean Drive, so download it now.

The wildly successful summer staple Piknic Électronik jumps off once again this weekend with the sturdy sounds of Epsilonlab setting up shop in Parc Jean-Drapeau on Sunday, July 30. Expect music from Éloi Brunelle, Paul Keeley, Alexandre Bilodeau and Miles Moore, and hope for nothing but sun all day long! Easily one of the better homegrown ideas to take off in the last few years, the Piknic, with its skillfully booked roster of guests, continues to grow in popularity. Check out www.piknicelectronik.com for upcoming events. This Tuesday, August 1, all you Plateau players might be interested in checking out Easy Tuesdays at Orchid with DJs Truspin, Spaz and Random, spinning the best in hip hop, reggae and R&B. They’re doing a release party for Hip Hop Nation Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, a couple of DVDs featuring people like 50 Cent, the Streets, Missy Elliot, Mobb Deep, N*E*R*D and DJ Craze. For guest list or further info, call 833-9926.

Don’t miss the Ninja Tune Clockout on July 28, when select members of the Ninja Tune contingent raid their record collections for some Friday-night goodness. Three dollars will get you into this music lover’s affair at Casa del Popolo starting at around 10 p.m. Also, don’t forget Platinum Army (Waajeed and Tiombe Lockhart) at Academy tonight, easily the show of the week, and do join us at the Goods over at Sala Rossa this Saturday, July 29, where Chicago’s Deeper Soul Recordings label head Josh Deep takes the reigns.

Drum & bass don Sase One dusts off some of the good stuff for an upcoming night at Blue Dog on Friday, August 4, when he joins Krinjah and massive for a trip down memory lane. Sase knows what he’s doing, so if you’re feeling randy, make a move.

A big goodbye to Paula “Marge” Myers, who’s moving to New York to be with her husband P-Love next week. Take care of that voice, kid...
