Good party, eh?

by SCOTT C

My upstairs neighbour had a party last Saturday night, and there to remind me that I’d missed some kind of blowout was a leaky bathroom ceiling and all the nastiness that comes with it at 4 o’clock in the morning. I even had to go to my girlfriend’s house on the corner to use the bathroom. It was either that or endure a steady stream of who knows what pitter-pattering down the back of my neck while I took care of business. The building handyman came after I cleaned everything and the worst had dried up a few days later, and told me, “It was probably water from your upstairs neighbour’s toilet.” Thanks, handyman. What would I do without you?

First things first. Those of you who are remotely interested in what Roots drummer Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson had to say in response to my two cents about his DJ gig in MTL, you’re very welcome to make yourselves at home at my MySpace page, where the once-dormant blog is now in full effect. It’s not exactly a full-on war of words, but it’s definitely worth a look, just to see where he’s coming from, at www.myspace.com/incubate.

When I’m not running up the phone bill calling Ethiopia on a daily basis, I can be found at What Else?. What Else, you say? It’s simply the name of a party going down tonight, July 20, at Academy, showcasing the DJing talents of Toronto’s always amazing Lil Jaz, Broken Social Scene’s Justin Peroff and the always enigmatic K-OS. Sound intriguing? Well, throw in the live painting of HVW8 Art Installations and this should be some party. Tix are $10 in advance, $15 at the door.

DJ Lexis wants the world to know that he’s finished his third installment of his What I’m Feeling mix series, and he’s ready to give it away free to the first 40 people who ask for it at the door over at Blizzarts this Friday night at Connect the Dots. The CD features music from cats like Daybre, Q-Tip, Seu Jorge, Visioneers, Quantic and a trailer-load more. As always, his partner DJ Kobal isn’t far behind, but who knows what he’s giving away for free.

Everybody needs to know about the new De La Soul mixtape, Impossible Mission, complete with new songs, insane production and a bunch of forgotten foolishness from the Daisy Age. Witness the power of these Long Island legends, without the shackles of a major-label deal dictating their next move. I’m also diggin this track called “Rhodes Ahead” by Dilla disciple Karriem Riggins, which turned up on a Fusicology sampler from Los Angeles. Watch this cat. Speaking of Dilla disciples, Bling 47 aficionados will know that Wajeed and Tiombe Lockhart, aka Platinum Army, will be in town for a live thing at Academy on July 27. Stay tuned.

Oh, by the way, don’t miss the party with ex-Pharcyde underground king Fatlip at Main Hall this Sunday, July 23, performing alongside Bleubird and Omni. And tell two friends that Under Pressure is coming...
