I ain’t never scared: Although the recent news surrounding the arrest of 17 alleged terrorists in Toronto hasn’t exactly deterred Montrealers’ outdoor plans, there’s a new group that wants to “re-claim public spaces across Canada.” I Am Not Afraid was created immediately following the arrests in Toronto. The site’s creators say they come from all walks of life and don’t hold elected office, and their Web site is looking for Canadians to contribute messages and organize meetings. Their first big event demonstrating their courage will be a rally, march and attendance at a Blue Jays game—the Skydome was, apparently, a target in the alleged plot. Before you cancel your summer plans in fear, visit www.iamnotafraid.ca. In the air tonight: Some people don’t go outside unless they read the weather report, so don’t be surprised if, in the future, concerned citizens check the smog report too. Hidden within the Canadian government’s informative yet convoluted Web site is Environment Canada’s skinny on smog warnings in our area. It might become an essential morning visit for anyone with a respiratory illness, children and crippling paranoia. Breathe easier, or worse, at http://lavoieverte.qc.ec.gc.ca/atmos/smog/estival_e.html. |
