With Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns on the horizon, the enterprising rights-holders at Warner Home Video are going all-out this week with Super-related releases, presumably looking to harness that marketing synergy, Krypton-style. The Man of Steel has a long history of appearing in non-comics media—his popularity only really exploded after the 1940s radio serial (which, incidentally, introduced the characters of Jimmy Olsen and Perry White). Also key to his pop culture endurance was the ’50s TV show, starring George Reeves.

All 26 episodes of seasons three and four appear on DVD this week. Decades later the more romcommish Lois and Clark, with Teri Hatcher and Dean Cain, would air, and season three of that series also comes out this week. Less known is the late ’80s/early ’90s Superboy show, (also out this week) which starred John Haymes Newton (and later, Gerard Christopher).

On the animated front, the Metropolis Marvel appeared in several cartoons shepherded by Bruce W. Timm, who’s successfully adapted many DC comics, including Batman: The Animated Series. This week sees season two of his Justice League series and volume three of Superman: The Animated Series released on DVD. —Mark Slutsky
