Stacked decks
to check

Coming up on Wednesday, June 21, yet another MUDJ Battle takes the template of your run-of-the-mill DJ head-to-head to hilarious new heights. This month at Alizé, DJ Manifest reprises his Supa Doopa character to duke it out on the decks with our very own trailer-park boy, Skratch Bastid, aka Hurricane. If you take a peek over at www.mudjbattle.ca, you’ll find promo videos for most of the DJs who’ve taken part in this original Montreal battle. As always, $10 will get you into this prestigious event, or a mere non-perishable item as specified on the MUDJ Web site will do as well.

Although they’ve been on the road for the last few weeks, Team Canada (DR One and Grand Theft) have returned to Montreal and are wasting no time in turning up the heat once again. This Saturday, June 17, they’ll be throwing a release party for Malicious’s new mixtape Control the Wind over at Lola Lounge, and they’ll be giving away free CDs to the first 100 people who roll through the door. If you plan on coming later, you’ll have to fork out $5. Watch www.mrmalish.com for further news on Malicious’s upcoming LP on OdoubleF Records.

If your interest lies in decks other than turntables, you might want to check out an exhibit that opens at l’Autre Galerie (4 St-Paul E.) this week in Old Montreal. Street Camp, a multidisciplinary skateboard art show, features decks from artists like Shepard Fairey, Dalek, Doze Green, Turf One, Timer, Red Labor and many more. At least 50 international artists will have their work on display from June 14 to 25.

Next Thursday, June 22, one-time Montrealer Josh Martinez returns to the fold for a show at la Sala Rossa with his good buddy Sleep of Oldominion. The Chicharones, as they’re so lovingly known, join forces with the aforementioned Skratch Bastid as part of the Suoni Per il Popolo fest for a night of frenetic hip hop madness. Tix are $8 in advance and $10 at the door.

Don’t forget Mobb Deep—on Monday, June 19, at Showcase (30 Ste-Catherine W.)—either. Who cares if Havoc and Prodigy are now on G-Unit? Who cares if the new album isn’t exactly the same grimy goodness? Who cares if the tickets are $45 and $50? Opening acts include Teflon, Magnum 357 and Bad News Brown, but I’d give my left leg to see H and P do “Pearly Gates” live. n
