The Incubator

Kudos and Budos

by SCOTT C

Ms. B called me early Tuesday morning to make sure I knew about the runnings over at Blue Dawg tonight, Thursday, June 1, when she and her partner Selecta Jinx celebrate three years behind the decks with a proper blowout. The $6 cover will allow you to enjoy the sounds of special guests King Farre, Shamba and Super Twitch. It’s also the dual album launch for Turbulence and Jah Mason’s new LPs, so expect goodies and giveaways all night long.

This Saturday, June 3, local hip hop group Omnikrom continue to expand their growing fan base with a show over at Main Hall, as part of the Decade Danse monthly. They’ll be sharing the stage with Gatineau and Sexy Boy. Tickets are $5 and the doors open at 9 p.m.

Got the full info on New York’s latest Afro-beat export to hit Montreal. The Budos Band is now confirmed for a June 9 show at Alizé, and if the walls aren’t dripping with sweat, it ain’t the Budos Band. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door, and can be found at Primitive Records. Fans of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings and the Sugarman 3 will no doubt appreciate the sheer power of this heavyweight band. Don’t miss it.

Kalmunity Vibe Collective collaborator Ra*faelle spreads her wings this Sunday with a show called Penombra, at the Mouse House up at 163 Van Horne. With help from members of Kalmunity and the Memmics Crew, the night promises experimentation with sonic senses and the voice as instrument. Don’t front, because it’s pay what you can, but make sure you’re there at 8 p.m. for what will be a short but genuine night of music.

Checked out the release party for the second LP from Daniel Russo Garrido, aka Boogat, last week over at Main Hall. Much like his first LP, Patte de Salamandre explores all manner of Latin roots while maintaining the b-boy stance. Boogat played to a full house with a live band that included collaboration with Karim Ouellet, Kenlo, Accrophone, les 2 Tom, Sola, Niño Malo, Showme and L Nino. Look for the new LP in stores now.

Seven reasons they’re just not ready:
1. Paco Aldebaran “Paco’s Theme” (CDR)
2. Dilla/Frank “Game Over” 7D remix (Lion Arts)
3. Moonstarr “Matholgy” (CDR)
4. Nish Rawks “On the Rawks” (BCR)
5. Gridlock Fam “Hold Me Down” Nicolay remix (CDR)
6. Sunz of Man The Old Testament (GSE)
7. Treizième Étage L’Asphalte dans mon district (13Deep)
