As if the U.S. government wasn’t already stretching resources with sensitivity training for its armed forces personnel, now those do-gooders at the UN have issued a report suggesting too many of America’s cops might also be ultra-violent psychopaths. Along with calling for the immediate closure of the Guantanamo Bay camp, the UN Committee Against Torture’s recently released “Concluding Observations and Recommendations” criticized the U.S. for what it suggests is a worsening use of excess force and brutality by law enforcement agents, particularly against those who aren’t white, Christian heterosexuals. Citing specific allegations of violence against citizens in post-Katrina Louisiana, the UN requested that the U.S. investigate and file their findings with the Committee within a year. Also tagged as an area of concern was police use of the non-lethal taser, particularly in cases where they’ve been used on children, seniors and people with disabilities. The U.S. drew further admonishing from the failure to indict anyone involved in the infamous Jon Burge case, in which the former commander in the Chicago Police Department and his jack-booted underlings allegedly routinely tortured 192 black prisoners over two decades. » Scott Saxon |
