Vote for me

by SCOTT C

Once again, I think it’s wise to take a few minutes to address the Best of Montreal results that so many of you love to hate. People have been asking me (of all people), how D.R. One ended up on both the Best Dressed and Most Desirable Man lists. Now, I don’t think I’m giving away any secrets or blowing the lid off anything by stating that securing your spot in any BOM list lies with your ability to get the vote out. I love D.R. One like he was my own son, but cracking number three on the hottie list is a quick lesson in organized voting. By simply “encouraging” a bunch of your friends and neighbours to check off your name on a ballot, you never know, it might get you into the top 10. That’s not to say that D.R. and Team Canada aren’t on fire in 2006, but if having a Best of Montreal credit on your resume is what you’re aiming at, you have a choice. Do something dynamic with your life that has a wide-reaching effect on Montrealers on the whole—y’know, something to get them talking—or start shaking hands and kissing babies to get the vote out. It’s really up to you. I hear D.R. is now favoured for People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive slot, as a direct result of his fine BOM sweep.

The Kops boys get it poppin’ once again this week when they welcome Tittsworth and Jinxx tonight, Thursday, May 18, over at Saphir. Rocking the Baltimore club music hybrid of house, hip hop and dance, you can expect the same debauched dancefloor that you saw at Low Budget’s last Montreal appearance. It’s $5 at the door, and you can check for Titt’s mixes and remixes at www.tittsworth.com.

If sketch comedy is your thing, get it in gear with the Montreal Sketch Comedy Festival this week. As part of the fest, check out Sketch Ya Hands Up!, tonight at 8 p.m. at Théâtre Ste-Catherine, when hams like Rodney Ramsey, Kwasi Thomas, Catherine Sedgwick and Chantal Marostica will stick it to you the best they can. Tix are $12, by reservation only, so make the call at 284-3939.

L’International du Cinéma Hip Hop de Montréal gets underway this week with several great flicks for all kinds of tastes. Making its festival debut is Marielle Quesney and Jean Labourdette’s Dead Space, screening this Saturday, May 20, at 4:30 p.m. at the Cinéma du Parc. The film follows legendary Parisian graf writer Psyckoze and his 22 years of lurking in the catacombs. Check out the official program online at www.hiphopcine.com.
