Never cry wolf

by SCOTT C

By now, you may have heard some tongues wagging about the plight of Salon Daomé, and some of the changes that are taking place at this Plateau mainstay. First of all, for the record, Salon Daomé is not closing. According to owner Yves de Lima, there’s been a slight schedule amendment as a result of noise complaints in the neighbourhood, but that doesn’t mean that they’re shutting the doors. The popular Dizzy Tuesdays and Soulmeka Saturdays have moved out and over to Academy on St-Laurent, but know now that you’ll still be able to get your groove on at Daomé throughout the week. Watch this space for future bookings and events.

Those of you who still like to get down on the ground should know that the preliminary battles for the first ever National B-Boy Championships will be happening tonight, Thursday, April 27 at Kola Note. Some of the country’s best breakdancers will gather to hash it out for the title and $2,000 cash, money that will go towards a trip to Los Angeles to compete in the International Championships. Tickets are $12 at the door, which opens at 9 p.m.

The party boys from aRTIST oF tHE yEAR bring their crazy live show to le Divan Orange on Friday. The four members of the band have known each other since kindergarten, so you know that the special bond between bandmates has been taken to insane new heights. Expect the dirty disco sounds that you may be familiar with from their last LP, cUT dISCO. Show starts at 10 p.m.

Montreal’s hardest working hip hop crew, Island City Monsters, are getting set for the fourth installment of their wildly successful annual blowout, Monster Mash. On Friday, May 12, they’ve booked the Just For Laughs Museum once again for Monster Mash 4, a show that boasts DJ Mana, Eye 2 Eye, Memo, Meta4ce, Twitch, Mr. Met (Lyricists Lounge NYC) and Velvet Trench Vibes. These guys go all-out when it comes to these well-planned and organized live shows, and that’s why people keep coming back for more.

This Saturday at la Sala Rossa, Heavyweight Art Installations celebrate their eighth anniversary with a party at the Goods. Founder Tyler Gibney makes the trip from his second home in Los Angeles to drop some records with Andy Williams and myself, while cofounders and painting machines Gene Starship and DSTRBO get live with some serious art on the spot. If you can remember going to parties at the old HVW8 loft on St-Alexandre, then we’d love to see you out. The last time Gene and Dan painted live at the Goods, the piece ended up on the cover of the magazine Waxpoetics for all the world to see. Check out www.HVW8.com for an in-depth look into the eight years of work that this group of Montreal originals has taken around the globe. Doors open at 10:30 p.m.
