Fans of Giallo, the distinctive Italian horror sub-genre, take note, as two superb titles have been released on DVD. Luciano Ercoli’s The Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion (1970) lives up to its title (perhaps the greatest in cinematic history). Here, one sumptuous young beauty (Dagmar Lassander) is accosted by a threatening and evil man. But after the attack, Lassander becomes obsessed with the mysterious man—who is he, and how did he seem to know various secrets about her shady husband? The art direction is particularly jarring here, with interior decoration that looks like a bad le Château outfit from the late ’70s. Ray Milland stars in Flavio Mogherini’s The Pyjama Girl Case (1977) as a detective who must unravel the baffling puzzle presented when a disfigured unidentified corpse is found. This added another bizarre title to Milland’s surreal CV—after winning an Oscar for The Lost Weekend (1945), the late great star found himself trapped in a B-movie netherworld. Riz Ortolani’s eerie soundtrack is also a standout. —MATTHEW HAYS
