Being iconic

Legend: Harold Hunter, pro skater, Zoo Yorker and movie star—he was the black skate-rat in the 1995 time-capsule-of-an-era film Kids—passed away last February at age 31. Hunter was an icon not just because of his moves, but also as a black skateboarder in a predominantly white scene, kind of a reverse Larry Bird of the half-pipe. His memorial Web site is a funny and touching tribute to a larger-than-life figure who didn’t have video games named after him, but is a legend nonetheless at www.haroldhunter.com.

Sincere flattery: Call it a tribute, satire, parody, inspiration, or just good ol’ fashioned copyright infringement—album covers that look like other album covers are a rock tradition as old as, say, fringed buckskin jackets, only less annoying. The knockoff*project catalogues many of these, such as the many rip-offs of thrift-shop stalwart Whipped Cream and Other Delights and an entire page of faux-Beatles at http://knockoffproject.com.
