Big ups to longtime Montreal radio personality Butcher T, who’s set to be honoured at the 2006 Stylus DJ Awards on May 29 at Toronto’s York Event Theatre. Butcher T’s constant involvement in Montreal’s radio community over two decades has gotten him inducted into the Hall of Fame. Congrats and continued success to this MTL original.

Host of CISM’s Rythmologie and all-around future-music keener Etienne Champagne joins workaholic DJ Kobal this Friday, April 14, for a hot music session over at Blizzarts’ Jivin’ Fridays. If you like to dance to funk, soul, hip hop and various broken flavours, make sure you hit the floor with these two.

After talking to former Bad-Boy producer Daven “Prestige” Vanderpool about the production workshop he’s doing at Nest this Saturday, I figured it’s high time I plugged Turf Builder, Montreal’s monthly showcase of local beatmakers and producers, just in case some of you forgot that this thing goes on every month. On Wednesday, April 26, and every last Wednesday of the month, people making music in Montreal are encouraged to submit a five-track CD of original material. Some people like to submit works in progress, others do remixes of known songs, while others like to hand in finished tracks complete with vocals and whatever’s clever. It’s really up to you. Tracks are played throughout the night on the house system at Kunta Lounge, and you, the artist, benefit from what is called instant feedback. It’s all very encouraging, and a great way to check out some of the great stuff being produced right here at home. Right now, we’re putting the finishing touches on Turf Builder Vol. 1, a compilation of some of the more impressive submissions from 2005, and maybe a first look at some of the future players in the next wave of Montreal’s musical talent. You can e-mail me at the address below if you have any additional questions, but I’m hoping all the people out there sitting on great music will simply be there on April 26, CD in hand.

Next week, I’m off to represent Montreal at the Jamie Lidell concert in Toronto on April 21. Since we got left out of the loop once again, I figured it was my personal responsibility to get down to the show and check it out.

Look out for Cosmo Baker at Saphir on April 20, when he brings his New York-style hip-rock-soulectro-bass party to Montreal for the first time. Also, as one of Montreal’s finest on the mic, Narcycist’s official Web site is up and running, for those of you who can’t get enough of the sandhill swagger. Check out www.narcy.net for the lowdown. n
