Proggy frogs and the story of O

by JOHNSON CUMMINS

Tonight, Thursday, April 6, you can check out ex-Eric’s Trip member Julie Doiron’s unique brand of sadcore at the Main Hall with Shotgun and Jaybird and local studmuffin JF Robitaille. On Saturday night, things heat up when No Idea recording artists the Holy Mountain play Zoobizarre with the stellar Cobra Noir and Last Days. Do not miss Cobra Noir, one of the most lethal hardcore bands in the city. Down at the Main Hall on Saturday is the East Coast’s best current export, Wintersleep, with Land of Talk and Contrived. Land of Talk have lately replaced the dearly departed Donkey Heart as Montreal’s biggest stage sluts, but with a new record in their grubby mitts, they better work it—buy it now.

When the bulk of your fan base is slightly-behind-the-curve high-school students and babysitters who rate shopping as their number-one interest, it surely must sound a death knell of sorts for a band. If that proves to be the case, then you better hurry up and see Karen O writhe and pout Saturday night with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, before they find themselves in the bargain bin alongside Sugar Ray. Not all is lost, as they at least had the foresight to bring the cream of the Williamsburg crop, Blood on the Wall, as openers, so make sure you get down to Metropolis early.

Sunday night, Mahogany Frog disguise the fact that prog is a four-letter word when they play at one of the best new venues in town, Club Lambi, with As the Poets Affirm. The Frog promises absolutely no flute solos, but asks that you check your jester hats and unicycles at the door. Tuesday night proves to be a big night when Italy’s noisy no-wavers Dada Swing play with Montreal’s Kickers at Zoobizarre. Also happening on Tuesday night is the epic psych-meets-garage of Gris Gris at la Sala Rossa—raising the stakes are the inclusion of Brian Glaze and the Sunday Sinners on the bill. Watch for the Sinners to drop their new EP in the next coming weeks—it’s hotsy-totsy!

Don’t miss legends Morbid Angel Tuesday night, when they prove that death metal can age gracefully, as well as the return of Poland’s power metal kings Behemoth and also Krisium and Despised Icon, at Medley. For my money, though, the big ticket this week will be on Wednesday night, when Soledad Brothers mix up MC5 urgency and Stones swagger at Petit Campus, with Heartless Bastards and the Confusers.
