Sort of a Canadian Rock ’N’ Roll High School, early ’80s cult classic Class of 1984 finally makes it to DVD this week, thanks to Anchor Bay. Toronto’s Central Tech High School stands in for the violent, inner-city (and more American-sounding) “Lincoln High,” and while Alice Cooper performs the theme song, Hamilton’s own Teenage Head actually appear in the film, as does Roddy McDowall and a young Michael J. Fox. “Very few films are as prophetic as Class of 1984,” Mark Lester once said. But then again he is the film’s director, so you might want to take that with a grain of salt, although the movie apparently caused a bit of a stir at the 1982 Cannes.

And speaking of controversy, the first Controversial Classics collection focused on social-issue films from the ’50s and ’60s, while the new Controversial Classics Vol. 2: The Power of Media contains three great news-oriented flicks from the ’70s: All the President’s Men, Network and Dog Day Afternoon. All three are packaged as deluxe two-disc special editions, with tons of special features—commentaries by Robert Redford and Sidney Lumet, vintage interviews, documentaries and more. —Mark Slutsky
