Burning chaos

by SCOTT C

Last Thursday evening, Al South was good enough to not only treat Woody and I to a ride home from the office, but he orchestrated a detour to Boa, and put a couple of pints on the table as well. I was scheduled to play some records at the very same establishment a little later in the evening, so it wasn’t long before I dipped home and returned to hold up the DJ booth for the rest of the night. It was pretty quiet, but towards the end of the night, a visitor who had been chillin’ at the bar decided to say hello. K-OS, who was in town for a few days, was having an unassuming drink and playing his low-key self at the big oak bar, but was good enough to come back and say what up.

Coming up this week, you can watch a new documentary on CBC about K-OS and the CBC Radio Orchestra called Burning to Shine. You might have seen glimpses of this production on ZED last year, but the doc will air in its entirety on Opening Night on Feb. 2, and on ZED Real on Feb. 7. Picture this: a young, complex hip hop star is commissioned by the CBC to write a score for the CBC Radio Orchestra in four weeks. The sporadic and impulsive nature of K-OS and the way he makes music is juxtaposed with the classical chops of the well-oiled radio orchestra, the last of its kind in North America. It’s an interesting premise, filled with nail-biting tension and the creative process laid bare! You might want to watch.

This Saturday, Jan. 28, Big Ghislain Poirier strikes back with yet another edition of Bounce le Gros over at Zoobizarre. This month, his special guest is Warp Records’ Matt Shadetek from New York City. He’s never been to Montreal before, so do your best to make him feel welcome. Ghislain has been busy too, and he takes this month to launch his brand new remix CD, Bounce le Remix. He passed me this bad boy at the grocery store about two weeks ago, and it’s pretty hot. Big, fat, squelchy reworkings of Dizzee Rascal, Roots Manuva, Neneh Cherry, Jay-Z, Missy Elliot, and, ummm, Vanilla Ice? Not really feelin’ that one, Ghis, but that’s just me.

Got a note from DJ Blast this week announcing that his brand new Web site is finally up and running. Check out www.djblast.ca to see what this nucka has coming up on the calendar. He’s got a regular gig over at Living on Thursday and Saturday nights, playing in the R&B room, and I don’t think he’d be mad at you if you decided to check him out. n

Seven reasons I can’t call it:
1. Tiombe Lockhart “Tip of My Tongue” (CDR)
2. Goapele “Good Love” (Columbia)
3. Team Canada Classic Material Vol. 1 (TCR)
4. Platinum Pied Pipers “Fever” DJ Spinna remix (Ubiquity)
5. Arabesque “Choked Up” (Sin Hombre)
6. United Soul “Good Days” (Team Soul)
7. J Dilla Beat CD #3 ’05 (CDR)
