David Lynch’s bizarre, frequently brilliant adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel Dune may be flawed in the extreme, but strangely compelling nonetheless. Rumours of lost footage and a mythical extended cut of the film have floated around for years, and indeed various versions of the movie have found their way to TV and video. The former, a recut with Lynch’s name taken off and the latter, a bootleg that includes production sketches and storyboards to give a sense of how the movie should have been. Finally, though, there’s a special edition DVD coming out for the fans, with documentaries, unseen footage, and an alternate ending. Perhaps now we’ll get more of a sense of what Lynch intended when he turned down another sci-fi epic to direct this. (You may have heard of the film he passed on—it’s called Return of the Jedi.)

Werner Herzog’s doc Grizzly Man looked to be one of the more fascinating films of 2005, but for some weird reason the distributor decided to dump it in Montreal theatres for something like five minutes. Now that it’s coming out on DVD, you can see for yourself. —Mark Slutsky
