Boy, that Robert Rodriguez sure doesn’t skimp on his DVD extras—unless, of course, you bought the bare-bones edition of Sin City that came out a couple of months ago. As expected, he’s also put together a very special edition of the film for a new DVD package, so if you’re a fan of the film, you’ll probably end up buying it again. He’s recut and lengthened the movie, separating it into four separate stories; slapped on a bunch of commentaries; included “The Long Take,” a 17-minute version of Quentin Tarantino’s segment; added documentaries on the cars, costumes, props and everything else of Sin City; thrown in The Hard Goodbye, a full-length Sin City graphic novel by writer/co-director Frank Miller, and more that won’t fit here.

Speaking of recutting, director James Gray’s 2000 crime drama The Yards was a visually distinctive, intelligent movie (if a little marred by some poor plot twists). The director’s cut is available on DVD this week (apparently Gray had a hell of a time fighting with Miramax over his vision of the film) with commentary by Gray and Steven Soderbergh—presumably a fan of the film. —Mark Slutsky
