Battle of the bands |

Also this Saturday is Chocolate Deluxx at Kunta Lounge, brought to you by the Urban Monkeys Crew, a crew so busy in the concrete jungle that they didn’t really include who was DJing at this month’s installment on the flyer. Expect soul, funk, old-school hip hop, R&B and reggae though, in case you were wondering where they were coming from. Hit up 383-5480 or urban-monkeys@hotmail.com for the whole story. Seven bucks at the door. Sunday is a night that will go down in infamy, as members of Kalmunity Vibe Collective and Nomadic Massive square off in the first ever Intimate Sky Soundclash at Main Hall. Here’s the tale of the tape: Kalmunity weighs in a little heavy, but have a great reach and a solid reggae/Afro-beat uppercut to get them through. The competition should watch out for the rhythm section, because that’s where they hit hard. Nomadic Massive may seem green compared to KVC, but they’ve proved themselves with national and international bouts, and seem to be training hard. Building on their multilingual hip hop heavy-bag work, they should put up more than a fight for their seasoned opponents. No real trash talk to speak of at press time, but this night will be a whole lot of great music and fun. I’ll be there playing records between clashes too, so come on down. Doors are at 8 p.m., $10 at the door. Lastly, some irate promoters who will remain nameless have asked me to point out that: 1. The guy that was shot and killed outside Vinyl on Nov. 27 had been in the club earlier, but there was no fight inside the establishment. 2. The incident took place outside the club after it had officially closed for the night. 3. The shooter was not inside Vinyl that night. 4. Police PR and several news sources reported that Vinyl was an afterhours bar, which of course it is not. And the band played on. It’s an unfortunate incident, the kind that can ruin the reputation of any reputable business just by association, so I understand how people might be feeling. The SPVM’s Benoit Couture told me that the investigating officer collected information about a “conflict inside the club that had moved outside,” but couldn’t tell me exactly who provided that info. Anyone who’s still angry about the scandalous details, even after this clarification, might want to blow their smoke in the direction of the police.
