From prime-time hit in the ’70s to late-night Montreal staple in the ’90s, the addictive Rockford Files finally gets the DVD treatment this week. James Garner is the titular detective whose famous answering machine was enough of a novelty back then to make it into the show’s opening sequence every week. Along with 23 episodes from the first season, the box set includes an interview with Garner about the good old days, a smattering of classic ’70s guest stars (i.e. Abe Vigoda, Ned Beatty, James Woods), and if that’s not enough, there’s always that infectious theme song by Mike Post (the Law & Order guy).

And now for the Wal-Mart files: Last month, director Robert Greenwald’s Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price rolled out in independent theatres and spaces all over North America (and on DVD), with a mission to raise awareness about the retail giant’s questionable business practices. For the other side of the coin, see the Galloway Brothers’ Why Wal-Mart Works and Why That Makes Some People Crazy, a straight-to-DVD movie that takes an “Ayn Randian” perspective on the controversy, and is apparently not financed by the corporation. —Mark Slutsky
