Well, he’s definitely done that—you’ve probably seen his work on more than one wall in and around the city. On top of being one of the most respected writers in town, though, he’s also just released his debut LP Leur médium/le remedium, shining a little bit of light on his talents as an MC. Monk-e called on an extended group of friends from Montreal’s hip hop scene to make this record, many of whom he’d met as a result of his visual art. The wide array of beats produced by up-and-comers like Loe Pesci, Stack Money, Toast Dawg and Sandhill are complemented by Monk-e and his friends on the mic, guys like Maybe Watson, Atach Tatuq, Butta Beats and Narcicist. “I’m already working on my next record,” Monk-e laughs over the phone. “I’ve gained a lot of experience making Leurs..., and I already know what I’m going to do different on the next record. I think I’ll work with less producers and guests, for more of a focused concept. This first record is more like a compilation of stuff I’ve done over a long time. I’m gonna try working in a straight line.” Tonight, Monk-e officially launches his debut LP with a vernissage/concert at Old Montreal’s Darling Foundry. Expect performances of many of the songs from the LP, as well as some special guests to keep the night moving. Monk-e’s eye—and ear!—for detail are immediately apparent, whether you’re taking in one of his paintings or vibing to his music. Vernissage/CD launch with guests at Darling Foundry tonight, Thursday, Nov. 24, 6 p.m. (show 8:30 p.m.), $15 |
