Balls-out poetry

by SCOTT C

Anybody remember when this city was bubbling with poetry slam-style events, where you could walk in and see people bearing their souls on stage, later to be judged by random members of the audience? I miss those days. Alexis O’Hara used to do a night at Blizzarts that attracted the cream and the crap alike, where you could catch the tragic genius, raw sexuality, stinging truth and mental illness of Montreal talent, all in one night. Once, Miss O’Hara caught me and my friend Maclean taking the piss out of an awful performance, and dared us both to suck it up and actually participate in the following month’s event. Both of us took up the challenge, but it was me that took the $50 prize for a bit I wrote, apologizing to a guy I used to make fun of in high school—because he lost a testicle. I was a poet, and I didn’t even know it! This Saturday, Nov. 26, take a minute and check out second-place World Poetry Slam champion Brendan McLeod, who’ll be performing at Café Esperanza. I’m sure he’s got a way with words. Call them up for the info at 948-3303.

Also on Saturday is the second installment of Bump, Simon B and DJ DAV’s monthly gig in the basement at Kunta Lounge. Doors open at 10 p.m., but you don’t have to pay the $5 cover until after midnight. Expect to dance to deep, funky and soulful house joints until 3 a.m., at least.

Montreal hip hop group Metazon has been quiet for a minute, but they’re back this Friday, Nov. 25, with a show uptown at Place à Côté (4571 Papineau, corner Mont-Royal). The night, called Word on the Street, will also feature performances from Dezed, DJ Germs, Rime Organisé, Abby, Dee, Collectif MTL and more. Tix are $8 at the door.

Check this out. Nomadic Massive and Kalmunity are going head to head in the first-ever Intimate Sky Sound Clash on Dec. 11 at the Main Hall. There’ll be three rounds of competition, with no disqualification, no holds barred, winner take all. Sounds like a wicked night, people!
