Though not yet released, a Vatican document approved by Pope Benedict XVI is stirring emotions after an Italian newspaper revealed that it forbids the ordaining of those supportive of homosexuality, saying it “impedes the building of correct relationships with men and women.” Though the church has always forbidden ordaining homosexuals, its disciplines never voiced an opinion on those who might not have a problem with homosexuality in principle. Michael Kelly, a writer and teacher whose career in Catholic education was cut short by his coming out, is among those who feel the new guidelines will only exacerbate a widespread problem. “This means gay clergy are expected to live lives of increased secrecy,” he says. Kelly believes at least half the Catholic clergy are gay and that the church is increasingly “looking like a sick institution, held up by sanctified denial and pious hypocrisy.” Members of the church have already come out against the document, including former leader of the Dominican Order, Reverend Timothy Radcliffe, who suggested “any deep-rooted prejudice, such as homophobia or misogyny,” might better reveal a candidate as unfit for the priesthood. » Scott Saxon |
