If you’ve never seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the TV show, not the movie), you’re probably not going to believe me when I tell you that it is possibly (next to The Sopranos) the smartest, funniest, strongest-written and all-around best television program ever. But it’s true! Creator Joss Whedon managed to weave so much rich, humorous and poignant material into the story of a blonde, teenage hunter of the undead, and do it in such a complex and subtle way, that you really need to see the show in bulk to fully appreciate its nuances. It’s best appreciated season-by-season, but if you’re a real fan with some change in your pockets, check out Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Chosen Collection, an astounding 40-DVD set collecting every episode from the show’s seven-year run, as well as a bonus disc.
Also in the realm of the hilarious and fantastical, although incredibly dumb, is this year’s Stealth, the movie about the intelligent plane who downloads MP3s and kills terrorists! Of course you need the feature-packed double DVD to really appreciate this one. —Mark Slutsky
